Have you ever wondered, what the most important thing is in your life as a Christian? What is it? Can you say that most important thing precisely? What is it? If there is the most important thing for you as a follower of Jesus Christ, do you know it? What is it? What disturbs me is that when I read the Bible, I see a lot of things that I must do. So I wonder, what is the most important thing of all things I must do for Jesus? What is it? If anyone is wondering like me, then I think we are together in this problem. What is it? These questions have been there from ancient times.
Now we look at Jesus in the Bible, He is teaching and healing. Jesus tells us a lot of things for us to do. At one time Jesus said: “If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them” (John 13:17). Still, I am puzzled, what is the most important thing for me? A good example is this passage: “Now as they heard these things, He spoke another parable, because He was near Jerusalem and because they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately. Therefore, He said: ‘A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return. So he called ten of his servants, delivered to them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Do business till I come.’” (Luke 19:11-13).
Jesus here gives us a parable. Now a parable is a story that helps us to understand things about heaven through what we can experience here on earth. Jesus gave a lot of parables. Parables make things clear. Parables are like windows in a house, they bring in light. Imagine, a house without windows may give us problems, if we are to live in there. A parable is an illustration. A parable gives me understanding of the point of the teaching. So Jesus used a lot of parables to teach us. But still, I have a problem. What is the most important thing for me as a follower of Jesus? What is it?
Looking into this parable, we see that it was told when Jesus was concluding His mission on earth. He was going to Jerusalem to die. So before He gets there, Jesus tells them a parable. This parable must be very important because it was told when Jesus was about to complete His ministry.
Friends, last words of a dying person are important to us. When a person is dying, and they tell important things, we hang on to that. We cry and tell others about those important last words. In most cases, we try our best to keep and do those last words of a dying person. Here, Jesus is going to die and He gives us some of His final words. Jesus makes sure that we understand His final words. These final words of Jesus must be important.
Jesus said: “Do business till I come” (Luke 19:13). These five words summarize what is most important for you and me. Notice that Jesus did not say, “Do business as usual.” He said: “Do business till I come.” An inquisitive mind may want to ask: “What business?” Well, a lot can be done for Jesus. First and foremost, we must acknowledge that Jesus came to seek and save the lost people (Luke 19:10). The passage we characterize as the Great commission stresses: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). Just before Jesus left going back to heaven from Mount Olives, He spoke to the crowd seeing Him go into heaven: “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).
Jesus’ business can be accomplished if each one of us prays, feeds on God’s word, and share our faith. If you do this, pray, study God’s word, and share your faith to those around you, then you are doing Jesus’ business. This, keep doing until He comes back. You will be a good worker for Jesus!
